How payment fees are calculated

4 minute read

Fees are deducted before settlement, not invoiced afterwards, and only on successful payments. There is no setup fee, no monthly subscription, and nothing charged on a payment that failed. This page takes the number apart and works it out in front of you.

What the number is made of

  • The card network rate: 1% for mada, 2.75% for Visa and Mastercard.
  • The anti-fraud fee: SAR 1.50 per successful payment, the same whatever the amount.
  • VAT: 15% on the fees themselves, not on the payment amount.

Apple Pay is not a separate line: what applies is the rate of the card used inside it — 1% for mada, 2.75% for Visa or Mastercard.

Why a fixed fee being fixed matters

The fixed part — SAR 1.50 — is a large share of a small payment and a negligible share of a large one. On a SAR 20 mada payment the total fees are around 8.6% of the amount; on a SAR 1,000 one they are around 1.3%.

The practical consequence: do not split one amount across several small links without a reason, and consider a minimum order value if your average payment is under SAR 50.

From the number to your bank account

The net amount joins your eligible balance. Settlements are scheduled three times a week — Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday — and transferred to the verified IBAN on your account.

The settlements page shows gross, fees, VAT and net for each run, and each payment shows its own fees. There is no side spreadsheet to keep.

What a refund does

A refund returns the money to the customer in full or in part and is recorded against the payment itself. It is bounded by the refundable balance and by the payment provider's rules.

Common questions

Is there a setup fee or a monthly subscription?
No. No setup fee and no monthly subscription. Fees are charged on successful payments only.
Am I charged for a failed payment?
No. A payment that did not succeed carries no fee.
Is VAT on the payment amount or on the fees?
On the fees only. The 15% VAT applies to the network rate plus the anti-fraud fee, not to the amount your customer paid.
Does Apple Pay cost extra?
No. Only the rate of the card used inside Apple Pay applies: 1% for mada, or 2.75% for Visa and Mastercard.
When are the fees taken?
Before settlement. What reaches your IBAN is the net amount after fees and VAT, itemised on the settlements page.
